Music Review: Ladysmith Black Mambazo

When I hear the first notes the first track on the Dolly Parton, chills went up and down my spine. I knew I was in for a special something.

Like many people, I first heard this South Africa a cappella group at the Taj Mahal, and Phoebe Snow, plus many others for a total of 30 stunning tracks.

But no matter who sing along, Ladysmith Black Mambazo makes each one special song with their multilayered, uplifting, and enchanting harmonies. The positive power of their music soothes the soul of each problematic, providing a beautiful backdrop for the event, and is just a pleasure to enter the ear and went straight to the soul.

In addition to “Knockin’ on Heaven’s door” and “Dimaonds on the Soles of Her Shoes,” another favorite instant of the first disc is a “Homeless” by Paul Simon (there is also a version on Disc 2 by Sarah McLachlan); “Chain Gang” by Lou Rawls; “Bread from heaven (Wales forever)” by Michael Ball male voice choir and chorus of Wales Squad; and the transcendent “Amazing Grace/Nearer my God to Thee” by Emmylou Harris.

On Disc 2, standouts include “people get ready” with Phoebe Snow, “Paradise Road” with Jannie Moolman, “River of Dreams” by Bill Champlin, “I’ll take you there” with Gospel singer gold.
